How to Build a Shed Floor When Building a Shed

The starting point for building a shed is the floor. In this article I look at tackling this crucial part of your project.

There are a number of ways to build a shed floor but the methods that I am going to discuss in this article are the most popular and effective. Your local planning authority may have regulations and codes to be adhered to to anchor your shed so your first port of call is there to double check that you are in compliance.

Unless you are building your shed on top of a concrete slab, which I will deal with again, there are basically 2 methods of tying it down.

1) You can use cable tie-downs

or a better way is to

2) Anchor your shed to posts

which have been pre sunk in the ground and stabilized with concrete surrounding the posts. You then need to assemble the proper materials which will include lumber for floor joists, rim joists, skids and two band boards.

Measure up carefully and cut your skids and floor joists to the proper dimensions. Then mark your two band boards for the layout of the joists and assemble your floor frame.

Then lay out your skids, which you should have cut at 4 inches by 4 inches, and line them up on your foundations ensuring that they are properly spaced and level. Now place the floor frame on top of the skids and make sure it is square which you can do by checking the measurements from the diagonals. Then nail all the joists to the skids and ensure that you nail them on center.

At this stage you need to organize whatever method of anchoring you are going to use before setting down and nailing the floor sheathing.

It is essential to the successful outcome of your shed building project that you get off to a good, solid start with a well constructed shed floor. Check out 5 keys to building a storage shed.
