Metal Garden Gates

If you have surrounded your house and garden with a solid wall and want to give your property an elegant look, while at the same time giving yourself maximum protection, the best way to go about this is to install metal garden gates.
Metal gates are made from wrought iron, brass, copper, steel and aluminum. Steel and aluminium are the most popular type of driveway gates because they are much cheaper than the other metals.

Aluminium is the cheapest and the lightest, but it can easily be damaged, therefore most manufacturers recommend steel gates. See also metal storage buildings.

Steel gates

Steel gates can be shaped to any form, giving them the look of wrought iron, but without the high price. Whichever type of metal you choose, these gates need little upkeep and if they are finished by being dipped in zinc, you don’t need to worry about rust for a number of years.

If rust is a problem in your old metal gates, there are a number of ways of cleaning them, either manually with rust remover for slight rusting, or professionally with power sandblasting guns if the gates are very rusty. Once free of rust the gates should be protected with antirust sealants. You can paint your gates with special paints especially made for metal, but plain black looks more elegant.

Wood fencing

Wood fencing can be combined with metal gates to give your property a finished look, but you can always change your wooden fence for smart metal that will match your gates if your budget permits.
Whether you are looking for single or double gates, you will find an enormous variety to choose from; tall, graceful Balmoral gates or Saxon gates with spiked tops to discourage intruders.

You can visit any number of websites that will offer you a selection of standard gates or you can directly to the manufacturer who usually has blacksmiths ready to make your gates to your own personal design that will enhance the elegant beauty of your property.

When you are shopping for metal garden gates, do get a number of quotes from various retail or private outlets, especially if the measurement for your gates isn’t standard. The prices will vary from dealer to dealer and will depend on the type and material of metal you are looking for. You should also make sure your walls are solid enough to support the weight of your new gates; if they aren’t, you will have to have metal rods installed into the brick work.
