Garden Shed Plans | Garden Shed Designs
There are a wide variety of garden shed plans available online, both free and for a small charge.
Choose from different sizes, rooflines and layouts to find the shed plan that suits your home best.
Size is an important option. The standard dimensions available online are for an 8 foot x 8 foot garden shed or a slightly larger 8 foot x 10 foot plan. Look for even larger sheds as well; up to 12 foot x 16 foot plans are readily available. For tight spots, there are more narrow plans that are ideal. A child’s playhouse, which is often designed to be 6 feet square, can be adapted into a shed by making the walls taller and the door wider.
There are various garden shed designs for these standard sizes. Placement of the windows and the door makes a difference to the design and can often be mirrored (flipped to the opposite side) or personalized to suit your needs. Remember that where you put these features will affect the ability for shelving and other storage systems inside. Keeping walls solid or free of windows allows for maximum storage flexibility. The door should be placed in the most convenient location for bringing items in and out of the shed.
Exterior siding or cladding is another design feature of wooden garden sheds. Most kits call for board on batten wood siding, which is a wide board (usually 1” x 8” or 200mm x 25mm) installed vertically and butted together. A thinner strip of that board (usually 1” x 3” or 75mm x 25mm) is then nailed over the joint, providing an exterior surface that is completely closed off.
You can also use tongue and groove wood siding and install it horizontally onto your framing. Cedar commonly comes in this type of board and makes for an attractive finish on your garden shed. It does require staining to maintain its attractive color.
The roofline of your garden storage shed is another feature that will set it apart. Some roofs are a lean-to design, while others have gables either on the side walls or the front and back walls. A gable is the space formed by a roof peak in an upside down “V” pattern. Gambrel garden shed plans are also available and have a barn-style roof. This allows for maximum height inside the shed for storing tall items.
Whatever your needs and tastes, there are plenty of garden shed designs available for use. Source out a plan with all of the desired features and tackle this project today.
